European Saudi Organization for Human Rights
Dear Human Rights Advocate,
The authorities in Saudi Arabia finally released the body of the Makki al-Orayedh, a month after his death at the police station in the town of al-Awwamiyah, situated in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia.
The European Saudi Organization for Human Rights (ESOHR) recently published a report with details of Al-Orayedh’s case, in which the Saudi authorities claimed that he died in custody due to ‘fear’, only two days after arrest at checkpoint between the towns of Safwa and Al-Awwamiyah.
After the body had been received, it confirmed earlier information about the torture of the Makki al-Orayedh, with both pictures and video footage documenting bruises and burns, as well as wounds inflicted with a sharp object on different parts of his body.
The death of Makki al-Orayedh in a police station under the Interior Ministry, headed by Crown Prince and Interior Minister Mohammed bin Nayef, confirms that such torture has become a systematic practice. Impunity following such acts within further promotes these practices.
This violation, as well as prior violations, coupled with the insistence of the Saudi regime to commit such heinous crimes, makes it imperative for all who wish to uphold human rights, such as organizations and the media, to work hard in order to spread the truth, and to hold the guilty to account as well as to protect the victims.
