A California deputy attorney general has been charged in San Diego with possession of child pornography.
Raymond Joseph Liddy, 53, pleaded not guilty on Tuesday, was released on $100,000 bond and placed on house arrest with GPS monitoring.
An investigation into Liddy was launched after an electronic service provider sent a tip to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in January that a user had uploaded an image that appeared to be child porn.
A month later another provider sent a similar tip to the organization.
Local and federal authorities said they traced the activity to Liddy’s home, where a search uncovered photos on a computer and thumbdrive of minors engaged in sexual conduct.
One image showed a nude girl blindfolded with her hands bound together, arrest documents said.
When FBI agents interviewed Liddy, he admitted to using Internet services and user names associated with the images that had been reported by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Local and federal authorities said they traced the activity to Liddy’s home, where a search uncovered photos on a computer and thumbdrive of minors engaged in sexual conduct. Liddy, a reserve Marine colonel, has been a state prosecutor since 2008
He said he used the screen name and other aliases to share sexual fantasies online and later deleting them.
Liddy said most of the images were of adults, though it was possible some were children.
The attorney general’s office said on Wednesday that it is aware of the matter and that the 53-year-old Liddy was placed on administrative leave.
Liddy, who received his law degree from Fordham University School of Law, has been a state prosecutor since 2008.
The reserve Marine colonel’s focus as a prosecutor has been healthcare, including cases about drug pricing, Medi-Cal fraud, elder abuse, kickbacks and off-label drug marketing.
He is the son of former FBI agent and lawyer G. Gordon Liddy, CBS 8 reported.
His father was a key figure in the Watergate scandal. He organized and directed the burglary of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in June 1972.
