As Syrian Kurds gaining ground, Turkey seeks a pretext for invasion

In fear of confirmation of this scenario, Ankara has launched attacks against Syrian Kurds, whom characterizes “terrorists”, even asking from the West a ground intervention under the pretext of ending the war in the neighboring country. Turkey is ignoring both the US recognition of Kurds as allies against the jihadists of the Islamic State, and Russia, which has warned that a ground intervention of foreign forces in Syria may trigger a third world war.
Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said today in an interview with Reuters agency that Turkey, Saudi Arabia and some European countries want to conduct a ground operation in Syria, but there is no broad consensus in the coalition for such an intervention, and noted that this possibility has not been discussed seriously.
“The coalition has not given this ground operation issue serious debate. There were opponents, and there were those who weren’t going to take part but expressed a desire for Turkey or another country doing it,” he said.
Recall that since Saturday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu stated that Turkey and Saudi Arabia could conduct a ground military action against the Islamic State in Syrian territory. The two countries are involved in in the US international coalition air strikes against the Islamic State.
The forces of the Kurdish Party of Democratic Union and the fighters of People’s Protection Units, the armed wing of the party, under the authorization of the Bashar Al Assad regime and the support of Russia and US, achieve continuous victories in the battlefields against the Islamic State and now control 14% of the Syrian territory (26,000 sq. km.), putting off the jihadists. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the Syrian Kurds control three quarters of the 800 km Turko-Syrian borders.
Their aim is to unite the three Kurdish cantons, Afrin and Kobane in the province of Aleppo and Jazira in Hasakah province, as well as autonomy for the Kurdish regions similar to that of Iraqi Kurdistan. “The main goal of the Kurds is the annexation of cantons. They want a decentralized Syria operating through a system of cantons,” states the analyst expert on Syria and the Kurds, Mutlu Civiroglu, from Washington for the AFP.
Recall that at the beginning of the war in Syria, Bashar al-Assad promised recognition of an autonomous province to secure the support of the Kurds, to repel the jihadists, who were spreading in Northern Syria. Syrian Kurds have already established a local administration from the northwest to the northeast part of the country.
Turkey also exploits the current chaos and tries to crush Kurdish resistance. One of the reasons that supports ISIS is to use it against the Kurds. It is a sub-proxy war by Turkey in the area according to its own agenda. The US are probably not very happy with that, because they want to use ISIS in full force against Assad and consider Kurds as allies.
