Sabotage? Police suspect foul play in Farage assassination attempt

Nigel Farage, the controversial leader of UKIP who’s previously been dubbed the “most hated man in Britain”, revealed this weekend a frightening attempt on his life.

While it happened in October, this is the first time he has gone public about it.

Farage said his car sped off a busy French motorway after a wheel on his Volvo came loose while making his journey home to Kent from Brussels.

“It was the middle of bloody nowhere and I was caught in a very bad position,” he told the Mail on Sunday.

Police told Farage the wheels had been deliberately tampered with, suggesting a deliberate attempt on his life.

“The French police looked at it and said that sometimes nuts on one wheel can come a bit loose – but not on all four,” Farage said.

The Volvo V70 comes with a single locking nut on each wheel, which should be immune from interference but if the other four nuts are loosened, then the remaining one is likely to sheer off as soon as the car is traveling at speed.

Farage revealed he’s had previous death threats, but didn’t know who was behind this attempt: “I haven’t got a clue. Quite frankly, the way my life’s been over the past two and a half years, nothing surprises me.”

He decided not to ask police to pursue the investigation because he didn’t want to “make anything of it”.

“The mechanics were absolutely certain of (foul play), but I have decided to take no further action,” Farage said.

This is not the first time Farage has found himself in a life threatening situation.

In May 2010, he was pulled from the crushed cockpit of a plane after an election banner caused it to crash, leaving him with broken ribs, bruised lungs, facial injuries, and chronic pain.
