Nuclear power plants are not clean. Nuclear plants are not sealed off. All nuclear facilities, uranium mines, thorium mines, reprocessing facilities, purifying facilities, recycling facilities and storage facilities release radioactive emissions just like a coal plant or car does. Except nuclear power plant emissions are radioactive, i.e. they are nuclear contamination.

The nuclear poison heavy metal contaminated waste is discharged regularly via venting and purging, in order for the plant to continue to operate.

Nuclear Meltdown: Releasing radiation and containing the truth

For months operators were unable to control the temperature and pressure levels in the reactors. They were forced to feed the reactors with water to hinder the rising temperatures and simultaneously bleed the pressure from the reactors through venting operations, in order to prevent the reactor vessel from being compromised or exploding. Despite their efforts, they were unable to prevent full-meltdowns from occurring in the Unit 1, Unit 2, and Unit 3 reactors, and the hydrogen generated in the crippled reactors destroyed the reactor buildings for Unit 1, Unit 3, and Unit 4. Despite all of this, TEPCO chose not to publically acknowledge the full severity of the situation they were facing at Fukushima Daiichi.

When Masao Yoshida, the former plant chief of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, later talked about the hydrogen explosion that tore apart the Unit 1 reactor he said “I thought it was all over”. This is the man on the ground with first-hand experience of what was happening, knowing that there was a very serious situation – and still the message was not being communicated to the public.

Despite their knowledge, TEPCO did not confirm that the three reactors had actually suffered meltdowns for months, a situation which cannot be tolerated or allowed to be repeated. Though the embattled utility admitted in 2012 that it played down safety risks (fearing that additional safety measures would shut the plant down and turn public sentiment away from supporting nuclear power plants), the true consequences of these actions has as of yet to be fully investigated and analyzed.

“I’ve suspected for some time that most nuclide emissions from nuclear reactors are not spread evenly across the whole year but during short refuelling episodes which occur about once a year and which last a few days or so.

These short spikes could explain a matter which has puzzled radiation protection agencies for decades – the reason for the apparent increases in childhood leukemias near NPPs all over the world. Governments have insisted that these increased leukemias could not be caused by radioactive emissions from NPPs as their estimated radiation doses were 100-1000 times too low. But as I will show, these estimates are riddled with uncertainties and they don’t take the time patterns of radioactive emissions into account.

“This is shown in the chart below for 7 days in September 2011. These data were from Gundremmingen NPP – a BWR reactor in Bavaria in Southern Germany. The chart showed that the normal emission concentration (of noble gases) during the rest of the year was about 3 kBq/m³, but during refuelling on September 22 this sharply increased to ~700 kBq/m³ with a peak of 1,470 kBq/m³. In other words, a spike. This data shows that NPPs emit much larger amounts of radioactive noble gases during refuelling than during normal power operation. From the new data, Nuremberg physicist and statistician, Dr Alfred Körblein, estimates that, at its maximum value, the concentration of noble gas emissions during refueling was 500 times greater than during normal reactor operation. He also estimates that about two thirds of the NPP’s annual emissions occur during refuelling. …

Why is this data important?
In order to refuel, reactor pressure vessels must be opened up: this releases large volumes of radioactive gases and vapors to the local environment. These include noble gases, H-3 (tritium), carbon-14, and iodine-131. Until now, nuclide amounts had only been published as annual averages throughout the world. Now, non-averaged values have been made available for scientific evaluation for the first time.”
